Never-ending train 2/13-2/14, 2011

We boarded the train in Varanasi to take us to Gweilor where we were to be picked up by our guide to go to Agra which is where the Taj Majal is located. Just being at the train station is an experience - but we found our car which looked not so bad although it did remind me of pictures I saw of the sleeper cars my grandma and grandpa used to take to New Jersey every summer about 45 years ago. No food on the train so luckily we had ordered sandwiches to bring along. Our train departed at 5:10 and the sandwiches were done by 5:15 so what to do now. The scenery was amazing and the train stopped at every little town along the way. It was called an express train but had to be a local because I don't think they missed a stop along the way. Sometimes people would get out to fill up water bottles or to use the bathroom which just meant going on the tracks. We were fortunate to have a bathroom in our car so we didn't have to do this but, actually, it would have broken up the trip! The porter brought in sheets and blankets and it was time for bed. Would have been great if the "beds" weren't as hard as a rock- but, we both slept surprisingly well and woke up thinking we were a couple of hours from our destination - wrong! As i mentioned, no food on the train so no breakfast except the snacks we had with us. I think this is the first time I have ever let Lauren
have chips and cookies for breakfast but on a healthy note, we did put peanut butter on the chocolate sandwich cookies!! We were supposed to get in at 9 but typical Indian train delays got us in at 12:15. a quick McDonalds lunch (of course, no burgers, only chicken and the McVeggie which I love) and we were on our way to see the Taj Majal!

Checked in to our hotel and got our first glimpse of the Taj - Lauren summed it up in one word "breathtaking".
